In 2008, her passion for public health education, international medical volunteer work, and environmental stewardship was the impetus for her 13th month-long internship on Ometepe Island, Nicaragua. Dr. Funk worked with Natural Doctors International (NDI) to provide medical care to people of all ages and walks of life, for both acute and chronic health conditions. In addition to working full-time at Moyogalpa Hospital on Ometepe, she also taught NDI Global Health Courses to medical students and developed a women’s health program entitled DIOSA, or “Goddess”, which provided Ometepe women with state of the art gynecological care and whose aim was to empower women to take charge of their bodies and health choices. She is fluent in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese. Dr. Funk has traveled extensively throughout Central and South America and participated in medical volunteer internships in Belize and Peruvian Amazon as well.
